Our Voix, an initiative by Megha Bhatia to raise awareness about sexual abuse among children

The cases of sexual abuse have risen in children over several years. Children lack of knowledge about sexual abuse, and improper education is major reasons behind this issue. To create a better India, Megha Bhatia started spreading awareness and educating children about sexual abuse.

The Idea of Our Voix

Megha returned to India after completing her master’s from University College of London. She realized the unfortunate situation of the country and got motivated to spread awareness. She came up with the idea of Our Voix. The platform provides children with an opportunity to voice their opinions, talk about and acknowledge sexual abuse.

Challenges Faced by Children

The cases of rape and non-contact form of sexual abuse are increasing. A non-contact form of sexual abuse is common, such as people masturbating children in the street in front of their eyes, teasing, and flashing.

Children, due to lack of awareness, do not understand sexual abuse. Schools don’t provide enough information. Half of the children are afraid to report the cases, and some don’t have the proper vocabulary to explain the situation. Sadly, many children don’t even know the names of their genitals.

Creating Awareness and Educating

Megha realized children need a non-judgmental and empathetic environment to share their problems. Educating them about the concept of friendly touch and bad touch is necessary. The platform Our Voix educates children about these concepts through animation.

Our Voix has made and released various short films. They presented the information in animated form because it grabs the attention of children and interestingly provides information. The short films connect real-life events and animation.

Work by Our Voix

The organization conducts workshops on sexual abuse and the ways to prevent it. Short comic strips are also available for children that talk about the prevention and importance of reporting sexual abuse. After watching short stories, many children have come forward and sought help from the organization.

Conducting Workshops

During the workshops, the team of Our Voix noticed that children easily relate to cartoon characters. The organization has collaborated with various NGOs to reach out to a larger audience. They have also conducted informational sessions in many schools.

One of the major challenges is to seek permission to run workshops on sexual assault. Because of mental blocks, many people hesitate on allowing to conduct seminars on topics like sexual abuse.

A Source of Inspiration

Mad4India admires the initiative of Megha. Awareness about sexual abuse is necessary for protecting children. The organization wishes to expand its reach and help more children. Mad4India hopes people draw inspiration from this story and work for the betterment of society.

  Education is a necessity to lead a life of dignity. Every individual has a right to education. Because of a lack of facilities, many girls do not get access to proper schooling. The quote that “where there is a will, there is a way” is suitable for the current story. A US-based non-profit organization CITTA has built a Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls school in the middle of the dusty Thar desert. It is a place that will empower and educate young girls and women in Rajasthan’s rural areas. Rajkumari Ratnavati – Architecture of the School The founder of CITTA, Michael Daube, hired US-based architect Diana Kellogg to design the school. Diana traveled to the state in 2014 and built the school by only incorporating ideas from the Indian culture. She gave the school an oval shape after observing that many households in Rajasthan had a courtyard in between the house. In many cultures, the oval shape symbolizes womanhood. The oval shape also naturally filters the sand and keeps the sun’s rays out.
